Trust & teamwork in leadership

Trust and collaboration are central to leadership at all levels, professional and personal. In this episode we discuss partnerships and how they can lead to collective success. Trust is the foundation for successful teamwork, allows for an exchange of ideas, generally creates a mutual benefit. What does trust look like today? A balance of receiving autonomy and taking responsibility in collaboration, recognizing each side’s perspective.

A basic level of trust is the starting place for most relationships at work.  Stages of growth, recognizing that acknowledging personal limitations and embracing the expertise of others are crucial steps along the way. Personal relationships can take a similar path, often mirroring our personality and approach in the professional setting. 

At home and at work, even small gestures can help build trust. Along with keeping perspective and giving people space, creating a sense of involvement for newcomers can also be beneficial. Work to recognize the good that surrounds you daily. By understanding trust and collaboration, you can build stronger bonds in all areas of life. Whether in the workplace or within your family, collaboration and building trust is an ongoing journey marked by resilience.

Put it into action:

Promote Open Communication and Autonomy:

  • Build a space for open communication within your family and team.

  • Foster an environment for people to take responsibility for themselves and their work while giving autonomy to those around them.

  • A leader can leverage individual, small group, and large group settings to set expectations and give feedback as needed.

Acknowledge Personal Limitations and Embrace Expertise:

  • Recognize strengths and shortfalls of team members, and acknowledge your own.

  • Look to experts for applicable knowledge in a given area and lean on others’ strengths to develop success for the group.

Cultivate a Culture of Appreciation:

  • Take time to acknowledge contributions of each family/ team member.

  • Recognize, celebrate, and reinforce achievements, even the small ones!

  • Include team members through open, clear communication giving each the opportunity for autonomy and responsibility.
